Welcome to the Pursue You Podcast, where we are empowering you to continually reflect, design and pursue who you were created to be so you can give the gift of your best self to your family, community, and business!
So, while I love talking about life and hearts and souls, I also LOVE talking business. One topic that I this is so important is to me is delegation. When people ask me how I’m able to do what I do, my answer is always “I have a lot of help”.
But getting started in this process of bringing someone to work for you can be flipping terrifying. I made my first hire at 24 for my real estate team, and I was completely clueless. Since then I’ve learned a lot, so as I was thinking about how to share about my passion for delegation, this ‘1st hire’ thing came to me because it’s not just for solopreneurs building a business. This is also for the stay at home parent who is drowning coordinating all the activities, housework, errands and life in general, and it’s also for the corporate exec who has hired so many people but maybe is in a rut of how to identify a new role or new way of finding talent.
Today I want to inspire you to think about the obstacles holding you back from making a hire, work through the questions and exercises I mention, and find one way to take action towards getting the help you need.
[2:20] I talk about how I was always too busy to find help, and how it was only the times that I was drowning in work that I ever though it might be time to hire someone for my team. This quote I heard early in my career completely encapsulates this feeling: “By the time you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.”
[3:00] I talk about three reasons why we think “we’re fine” and we don’t need any help. The most common questions that impact people’s decision to make a hire have to do with finance, consistency of work, and how to actually find the person they want to hire.
[4:00] I start out with a deep dive into why finances hold us back. I talk about the importance of getting clear on what value that new hire brings to the table, and how to determine how you can use the time you would be getting back.
[10:00] I talk about how to determine your hourly worth, to see how much extra you’re paying yourself to do a low-cost task. I teach you how to asses how many lower dollar-per-hour jobs do you have on your calendar that you are overpaying yourself for that could translate into a new position, and potentially save you money!
[11:40] I talk about avoiding thinking of a new hire as a lifetime decision in order to make it manageable and affordable. I teach you how to use a 30/60/90 tool that will give you benchmarks for the team and the new hire to hit make sure this is good for you and good for the new hire.
[14:40] I talk about how to determine the work your new hire will do, and what how to anticipate what to do when there isn’t always enough work.
[16:40] I discuss two exercises you can do to make sure that you are clear on what your expectations are for the job, and to be ready for when they have done all the work and need something else to do. Bonus: You may discovery you actually get to start doing things you’ve never been able to do before in your business!
[20:00] I talk about how not knowing where to find the person for the job can hold you back. Just by getting clear on the help you need is a big step. You have to get clear on the type of person that would be best for the job, assess what their needs are, find them where they are, and speak to them in a way that makes them want the job.
I know you feel that hiring and delegating is nerve wracking, especially if you like to plan everything. This process may ruffle some feathers, but I hope that by answering some of the most legitimate concerns that you can reflect on what’s limiting you from taking that next step. I recently came across a quote in the book Clockwork that said, “You can’t hire too soon, but you can hire too fast.” If you’re planning on growing a team in the future, the sooner the better. Remember, if you’re feeling thirsty right now, you’re already dehydrated. You owe it to yourself and your team to get some help.
